Why work in Papua New Guinea

There is a large abundance of work available in Papua New Guinea with many of the mines, there is also a contract been awarded for a LNG plant, with two 3.3 million trains, including facilities for inlet processing, treating, liquefaction, storage and loading. This will create a great need for thousands of skilled tradesmen experienced in this type of construction. With the vast skilled employment positions available in Papua New Guinea by western companies and to be employed by a western company this offers you better opportunities should you be wanting to apply for a skilled migrant visa for that country. The National Flag of Papua New Guinea

The Papua New Guinea National flag, formally adopted in 1971, is rectangular in proportion of four to three. It is divided diagonally from the top to the hoist to the bottom of the fly. On the upper part appears a yellow " Kumul ", Bird of Paradise on the red background. On the yellow part are five stars representing the Southern Cross, on the black background. Black, red and yellow are traditional colours in Papua New Guinea. The Bird of Paradise plays an important role in the social and cultural activities of many groups in the country and its plumes are often used as ceremonial decoration. On the flag it is shown soaring above the Southern Cross, with display plumes trailing, symbolizing Papua New Guinea's emergence into nationhood. The Southern Cross is the constellation notable in the night skies of Papua New Guinea and other countries of the Southern Hemisphere. It appears on the flag to signify the country's historical relationship with other nations of the South Pacific.

Some information about Papua New Guinea (PNG)

Papua New Guinea (PNG) occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, just north of Australia, and many outlying islands. The Indonesian province of West Papua (Irian Jaya) is to the west. To the north and east are the islands of Manus, New Britain, New Ireland, and Bougainville, all part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is part of the Australasia ecozone, which also includes Australia, New Zealand, eastern Indonesia, and several Pacific island groups, including the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. The Capital of Papua New Guinea is Port Moresby. The population of New Guinea is approximately 6 million people. The culture of Papua New Guinea (PNG) is many-sided and very complex. Papua New Guinea is one of the most diverse countries on Earth, with over 850 indigenous languages and at least as many traditional societies.

Industry

Papua New Guinea is richly endowed with natural resources, mineral deposits, including oil, copper and gold account for roughly 70% of export earnings the country also has a high agriculture industry with coffee, cocoa and coconut production.

The Porgera Gold Mine is a large gold mining operation located in Enga province, Papua New Guinea ..The mine is located at the head of the Porgera Valley, the site of the current open pit used to be Mt Waruwari it has now been excavated. The Porgera Gold Mine is operated by the Porgera Joint Venture (PJV). Barrick Gold, the world's largest gold mining company. A large fleet of Cat 777 and Cat 789 trucks surface haul fed by O&K shovels, and smaller excavators and loaders.

The Lihir gold mine is on the island of Lihir, in Papua New Guinea's (PNG) New Ireland Province, about 900km north east of Port Moresby. The principal asset of Lihir Gold Ltd, the mine was managed by a subsidiary of Rio Tinto until late 2005, since then it has been operated directly by Lihir Gold. Lihir is an open pit mine consisting of adjacent overlapping pits. Lihir opened in 1996 and is expected to become one of the 15 largest gold mines in the world.

Ok Tedi Mine - Papua New Guinea

The Ok Tedi Mine (OTML) is situated at Mount Fubilan in the Star Mountains in western PNG close to the Indonesian border. OTML is one of PNG’s largest export earners, contributing about 20% to PNG’s exports each year. Ore resources are estimated at 344 Mt grading at 0.88% copper and 0.92 g/t gold.

Port Moresby

Port Moresby population of just over 255,000 is the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea (PNG). The city is located on the shores of the Gulf of Papua, on the southeastern coast of the island of New Guinea. Port Moresby is the main point of entry for all air-traffic and most of the boat-traffic. The main local airline is called Air Niugini and flies mainly to and from Australian cities in codeshare with Qantas, but also Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. Virgin Blue also flies to Cairns and Brisbane. The economy of Port Moresby is largely based on the mining sector, there is a great demand in Port Moresby for mining engineers, haul truck and bulldozer drivers and IT experts.

Enga

Enga is the highest and is the second most rugged province (after Simbu Province) in Papua New Guinea. The population of Enga approximately 300,000 people. The economy of Enga is Gold mining and with one of largest Gold mines in Papua New Guinea.

Lihr Island

Lihir Island is the largest island in the Lihir group of islands, 22 km long and 14.5 km wide, in Papua New Guinea's New Ireland Province. It consists of a complex of several overlapping basaltic stratovolcanos rising 700m above sea level. While the volcanoes are not currently active, geothermal activity is still present. The economic focal point of the Island is the Lihir Gold Mine. The mine is operated by Lihir Gold Limited. The mine holds one of the world's largest gold resources (40 million ounces). The largest settlement on the Island is Londolovit, where most of the expatriate mine employees live. Basic shopping and health care facilities are located here. The local hospital has inpatient and outpatient facilities and provides health care services to both the expatriate and local communities.

Driving Licences for Papua New Guinea

For expatriates entering Papua New Guinea, your overseas drivers licence will be sufficient for the first three months (90 days), however, it is always wise to obtain your Papua New Guinea licence as soon as possible. It is also the 'law' here that you carry on you at all times your drivers 'licence', failure to do so may cost you an on the spot fine or a visit to the local police station.

Taxation in Papua New Guinea

The Papua New Guinea tax year is a calendar year running from 1 January to 31 December. Returns of income should be lodged by 28 February in the year next following the tax is year, unless an extension of time is requested and granted.
