Working in Brisbane, Queensland Australia

Brisbane (or more affectionately known as Brissie) is the state capital of the Australian state of Queensland and is the largest city in that state. The statistical division of Brisbane has an estimated population of approximately 2 million.

Brisbane is situated in the southeast corner of Queensland Australia. The city is centred along the Brisbane River, and its eastern suburbs line the shores of Moreton Bay. The greater Brisbane region is on the coastal plain east of the Great Dividing Range. The Brisbane central business district (CBD) lies in a curve of the Brisbane river. The CBD covers only 2.2 km2 (0.8 sq mi) and is walkable.

Like many western cities, Brisbane sprawls into the greater metropolitan area. The lower population density reflects this fact in that most of Brisbane's housing stock consists of detached houses.

Brisbane's economy has white-collar and blue-collar industries. White-collar industries include information technology, financial services, higher education and public sector administration generally concentrated in and around the central business district and recently established office areas in the inner suburbs. Blue-collar industries, including petroleum refining, stevedoring, paper milling, metalworking and Queensland railway workshops, tend to be located on the lower reaches of the Brisbane River and in new industrial zones on the urban fringe.

Brisbane has multi-campus universities and colleges including the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University. Other universities which have campuses in Brisbane include the Australian Catholic University, Central Queensland University, James Cook University, University of Southern Queensland and the University of the Sunshine Coast.

One of the best ways to explore the beautiful city of Brisbane and its outer suburbs is by bicycle. Brisbane City Council has built more than 900kms of bikeways across the city for easy travel and enjoyable recreation. The Bicentennial Bikeway is flat and follows the Brisbane river from the central business district out to Toowong the great coffee shop precinct of Brisbane, or explore the any of the bikeways that are situated in and around Brisbane from visiting the Wetlands to Wynnum/Manly esplanade and have some of the fish and chips while enjoying the view on the bay.

Brisbane also has an extensive transportation network within the city, as well as connections to regional centres, interstate and to overseas destinations. Public transport is provided by bus, rail and ferry services.

While Brisbane may be the 3rd largest city in Australia it still retains a laid back country feel about it. Brisbane is emerging as one of the most desirable places to live in Australia, despite it being known as the “country cousin” to Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane is still is able to offer the a cosmopolitan city with world class art galleries, live music and a fantastic cafe culture not to mention some of the best world class restaurants any major city has to offer.

Tourism is an important part of the Brisbane, both in its own right and as a gateway to other areas of Queensland. Brisbane is the halfway point of the Gold and Sunshine coasts. It is only an hour’s drive to either of the coasts.
