Recruitment News and Skills Shortage Issues

Australian Skills shortages return with a vengeance

Overseas Recruitment Services; Jul. 21, 2010
Australian Skills shortages return with a vengeance says a report by The Australian Industry Group and Deloitte, they surveyed more than 400 Australian companies and found that nearly half expect the skills shortage in Australia to be a real problem for them in 2015.

Moreover, Australian Companies are expecting the skills shortage problems to worsen in the next five years in Australia.

The Ai Group's chief executive Heather Ridout says while skills shortages never really disappeared with the financial crisis, they are set to intensify to pose the biggest threat to Australia’s economic growth.

"Of particular concern to Australian Companies is that the skills shortages are intensifying in Australian Jobs associated with manufacturing, construction and engineering, which are pivotal to the Australian economy," she noted in the report.

"There are massive Australian Skills Shortages in occupations which have a long development lead time, are in high use across the economy and whose absence puts industry at high risk."

The survey also found nearly two-thirds of Australian businesses could not fill Australian jobs over the last six months, because they could not find skilled workers in Australia.

A regional managing partner at Deloitte, Gerhard Vorster, says "The problem is real, and it's there now,!”
